Type in the Built Environment

Collaborative Project with ARGD 4020, Environmental Graphic Design

Project: Using Typography and typographic elements to establish a system to encourage place-making and help address wayfinding issues in the main Dodd spaces. Use typography as BOTH information and “imagery” or graphic element in your treatment.

The system should be flexible enough to address the varied needs of different types of Dodd spaces while maintaining enough visual consistency to be cohesive. At the same time, keep in mind aiming to visually communicate the creative art and design activities that happen within these spaces (i.e., This space offers room for an inventive solution that might not be an appropriate for a hospital or insurance headquarters, e.g..)

(Some) Dodd Building Issues (to start):

Exterior signage:
—main building doesn’t have name/discipline indicated on the outside (except the small brown traffic signs in the back) What element(s) could be used to activate the front plaza area, temporary and or permanent solutions…

What built environment planes are at your disposal for placement of information? ground/wall/window, etc. what is the appropriate material to use for each specific area and for a temporary/ephemeral vs permanent installation?

Interior
— Little to no “way finding” or differentiating of areas/ spaces.

— There *are* room numbers but there is almost not other directional information to initially get a visitor to the correct area to even find the room.

— The North/South divisions that divide the building  don’t seem to be all that clear or helpful (?) & are not always reflected on room signage

— No obvious that faculty office are off the main hallways.

Things to consider:
— Avoid solutions that might further encourages increased “area silo-lization” (so further divisions by area of concentration such as Painting & Drawing or Art X, for example.)

— How can solution represent the action(s) that is happening/may occur within a particular zone (see the “make” and “look” designations on this project.)

— How could a solution encourage/facilitate more collaboration between disciplines?

— What kind of “low tech” or ephemeral solutions could work (and perhaps also communication the creative activity going on in the space?)

— What opportunities do the stairwells offer up (while still following building codes/fire safety guidelines.)

— What are the possibilities of using the many interior windows? (while not blocking all the great light!)

Deliverables:

digital files
— min. 6 different types of image-based comps showing design solution in contexts/locations. (as pdf)
— final design “implementation” file including specifications [might be called a “digital mechanical”] (as pdf)
— Final design files, packaged

print:
— min. one example of each component/type of signage/treatment at scale (to assess legibility). (color less important) (as pdf)
— one large print of each team project for hallway display. details tbd
